Leaving Home Under 16 years old. If you are under 16 the law says you cannot live on your own as an independent person. You cannot work full time. You will not be able to claim benefits for money to live on. You will not be able to rent somewhere to live. Sometimes there are good reasons for not wanting to go home. If it is dangerous to go home or you cannot go home for some other reason, talk to someone. If you cannot talk to your parents or carer, try talking to a social worker or another member of your family, perhaps a grandparent. The police may also be able to help. Is there a teacher at school you could talk to? Or you could phone Childline 0800 1111. 16 or 17 years old. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you will need your parents or guardians permission to leave home (except in Scotland). If you left home without permission the police would need to ensure you are in a place where you are safe. 18 years old or over. If you are 18 or over, you don't need anyone's permission to leave home. You are classed as an adult. You can vote, get married, and sign contracts etc. |
