Job Title: Creative Arts Youth Worker (Internship)
Contract: Fixed term (12 months)
Hours: 35 hours per week (including evenings and weekends)
Salary: paid at the Real Living Wage.

Job Outline

An exciting position has become available within CYP Yellow Door for a full-time Creative Arts Youth Worker (Internship).

In your role, you will engage and support young people through creative arts projects and programmes within our clubs and activities, fostering their personal, social, and artistic development. The role involves planning and delivering arts-based activities that inspire creativity, build confidence, and encourage positive participation. You will collaborate with colleagues, young volunteers, the local community, and other organisations to create inclusive and accessible opportunities for young people. You will also provide mentorship and guidance, helping young people explore their talents and achieve their potential in a supportive environment.

This role is part of the Jack Petchey Internship Programme.

Your role includes participating in the Jack Petchey Internship Programme with 20 other interns from different youth organisations in London and Essex. This will involve attending a residential launch conference, four professional development workshops throughout the year, and a celebration event at the end of the programme. The training days and events will take place in person in London. You will be expected to participate in this programme alongside your role at CYP Yellow Door.

Key activities and responsibilities

  • Developing and Delivering Creative Arts Activities: Plan and deliver various arts-based programmes and activities that inspire creativity and self-expression, including workshops in visual arts, music, drama, dance, and other creative disciplines.
  • Supporting Youth Clubs and Activities: Engage with young people during club sessions and outreach work, encouraging their participation in creative arts projects.
  • Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment: Foster a welcoming atmosphere where young people feel safe exploring their creativity, expressing themselves, and building their confidence.
  • Mentorship and Guidance: Provide mentorship, coaching, and support to young people, helping them develop their artistic skills and personal growth. Encourage self-awareness, independence, and individuality through creative arts.
  • Collaboration and Community Engagement: Work with colleagues, young volunteers, local communities, and partner organisations to design and implement arts-based projects that are inclusive and accessible to all young people.
  • Safeguarding and Professional Conduct: Ensure that safeguarding policies and procedures are followed, prioritising the well-being of young people. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Document, evaluate, and report on the outcomes of creative arts activities and projects. Keep registers, write evaluation reports, and produce case studies to demonstrate impact.
  • Staying Informed: Keep up-to-date with best practices in youth work, creative arts education, and relevant legislation. Incorporate this knowledge into your work.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Carry out all duties in accordance with Yellow Door’s policies on Health and Safety, Child Protection, and Data Protection, and in compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Additional Duties: Perform any other duties appropriate to the post as directed by Yellow Door.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Creativity and Passion for the Arts: A genuine passion for creative arts and an ability to inspire and engage young people through artistic expression.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to quickly establish positive relationships with young people and motivate them to participate in creative activities.
  • Organisational and Planning Skills: Strong organisational skills with the ability to plan and deliver arts-based activities effectively. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Teamwork and Independence: Friendly, cheerful, and positive, able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Understanding of Safeguarding: A solid understanding of safeguarding children and young people, with the ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Commitment to Equality and Diversity: A working understanding of equality and diversity, with the ability to challenge discriminatory behaviour and create an inclusive environment.
  • Experience with Young People: Experience working with children and young people, particularly in arts-based or creative settings.

Desirable:

  • Full Driving Licence: Ability to travel to various locations as required.
  • Specialist Skills in the Arts: Specific skills or experience in a particular creative discipline (e.g., visual arts, music, drama, dance, etc.).
  • Experience in Community Arts: Experience in delivering community arts projects or working within a community arts setting.
  • Experience of working with children and/or young people in a challenging environment.

Location: Yellow Door Youth Hub and during outreach parts of Castle Point. No working from home; work takes place afternoons and evenings. Some weekend work will be required.

Canvey Island Youth Project (Yellow Door)  is a small independent charity providing a range of services for young people age 11 to 25.  Their focus is on young people’s health and well-being providing services such as an advice, information, counselling, outreach, small groups work, youth clubs and activities and drug and alcohol education.
